APEX Upgrade for the Center for Internet Security

The client primarily needed an upgrade of their existing APEX environment. The system version in place was outdated and leading to poor performance and efficiency issues.

Business Case

The client primarily needed an upgrade of their existing APEX environment. The system version in place was outdated and leading to poor performance and efficiency issues.

An updated system would improve efficiency and achieve stability. Bringing the environment up-to-date would give access to all the latest features available and provide bug fixes in APEX.

The project required an upgrade to Oracle Applications Express (APEX) to 5.1.2 from APEX 4.2.

The Solution

CMA provided a consultant with extensive experience in Oracle APEX development and administration. This consultant is one of the few local experts in APEX, as well as a senior level programmer with experience in Oracle 10g administration and development, SQL server, VBA, and shell scripting. As an expert in APEX, he quickly identified CIS’s needs and provide a comprehensive solution to address them.

CMA’s consultant upgraded the test and production environments of APEX from APEX 4.1 to 5.1.2, configured all middleware and performed all the required testing to ensure that the application was performing properly. He took additional steps to ensure that all references to the previous code were updated to the correct references.

The Results

The consultant provided by CMA offered a complete system upgrade from APEX 4.2 to APEX 5.1.2 in less than 48 hours. This upgrade significantly improved the speed of the system, its efficiency, and the stability of the platform, especially in terms of how it interfaced with other programs.

Additionally, during the project, the consultant identified numerous, difficult to detect errors that could easily have been missed by someone less proactive.  Without the discovery of these errors, the applications would have been mostly functional, but not operating correctly, causing subtle issues with performance and functionality. CMA’s consultant identified and remedied these hard-coded references to outdated code, preventing further problems for CIS that would have appeared later.
